Why search engines are important
Search Engine usage has emerged as one of the most integral tools on the Web. A report issued by comScore found that the percentage of search users was almost equal to those who use email.
According to this study, almost 90% of all Internet users use Search Engines to find information. There was an increase in 55% in the number of searches conducted between 2004 and 2005.
Compared to other online activities, email and Search Engine use top the activity lists of adult Internet users. Email is used by 77% of all adults on the Internet and 63% use Search Engines to find what they are looking for. This compares with 46% reading news, 18% using instant messaging, 18% online banking, 8% using chat rooms, 5% making travel reservations, 3% reading blogs, and 3% participating in online auctions.
Broadband adoption has contributed greatly to this explosion in Search Engine usage as more and more people are beginning to see the Internet as the first line of information.
Internet users have numerous search engines to choose from with Google the market leader at the moment. Google also serves the largest share of the Internet population for ‘local’ search where users conduct their searches with ‘local qualifiers’ to return location-targeted results. The number of local searches conducted on Google in November 2005 was 195,790,534.
If you’re not appearing in the Search Engines then you are going to be overly reliant on offline advertising to get your company’s name across to potential customers. Using the Search Engine Optimization Report to increase your chances of being found through search is one of the most cost-effective solutions at your disposal.
